When we were boarding the flight out of Airlie Beach, we were wondering to ourselves: Exactly why are we leaving this really cool, beautiful Aussie paradise? Could Australia get any better? Well, Airlie is certainly awesome, but turns out so is the Great Ocean Road.

We flew into Melbourne, picked up a rental car and immediately drove out of town. As he had done whilst traveling in the UK, Tom did pretty much all of the driving and adapted quite quickly. This was one of only two nights we were winging it as far as lodging and it turned out nicely with a stop in the coastal town of Torquay, just north of the famed surfing spot, Bells Beach. Per usual these days, dinner, a pub and more rugby wrapped up the travel day.

The next morning was beautiful, and we launched into doing one of our favorite things–just driving and stopping at anything that looks interesting. Our destination was less than two hours away, straight through, and we had all day to meander.

A bit of a wrong turn landed us on the beach for coffee and breakfast (brekky, they call it here), where we watche surfers, dog walkers and wanderers. Did a little wandering ourselves to stretch the legs and get the day off to a glorious beginning.

After Bells, we made a short stop at a lighthouse, then continued on to our next stop, Apollo Bay and Marengo!
