The original thought had been a week in Hawaii. But once I realized we had enough airline miles to get us to Oceania and back the decision was kind of a done deal. Flying into Brisbane where our friends live was going to require a layover in Fiji anyway, so we decided to make it a couple of days.

Then the decision was, where to go once we got there. We divided up the research duties, with me taking Australia and Tom taking New Zealand. Australia’s size was intimidating, but we ended up deciding on 2 weeks that would include Brisbane, Airlie Beach (where we can access the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands), then down to Melbourne with a quick side trip to the Great Ocean Road.

But then we started talking about New Zealand. While Australia was way too big to think we could see even a significant portion, New Zealand was a different story. Two weeks turned to three weeks, which ended up being four weeks. We’ll be flying into Queenstown, renting a car and meandering to the Northlands and then back to Auckland to wrap it up. Lots of things we are planning along the way, but mostly we want to explore.

But it all begins with the drive to Louisiana, which starts tomorrow!
