Following Dunedin, we had two full travel days. Although we talked about making an overnight stop in Christchurch, we opted to get a little northwest of the city—we would have only been there one brief evening, and this way we were able to get a bit of jumpstart on the next day’s drive.

While the drive was mostly about the scenery, we did make a stop in Oamaru and visit to the Steampunk World HQ. We went over Arthur’s Pass en route to the Nelson region, via the west coast, and there were plenty of great views–and winding roads. Stopped at the Beasley Hotel for a quick coffee, just shy of the pass. Looked like a great place to stay for a bit, pretty amazing vistas and plenty of hiking and, in winter, skiing options nearby. Would have like to stay a bit longer, but…Onward!
